EXCLUSIVE — Virginia Republican congressional candidate Hung Cao has released a new TV adhammering his opponent, Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA), for failing to protect parental rights.

The ad, which will air on broadcast television beginning Saturday, blasts Wexton for her ties to Virginia state legislator Elizabeth Guzman, who has said she would reintroduce legislation in the Virginia General Assembly that would expand the definition of criminal child abuse to include parents who do not affirm their child’s chosen sexual or gender identity.

The ad notes that Wexton, who has represented Virginia’s 10th Congressional District since 2018, has previously campaigned with Guzman.

“Jennifer Wexton has a problem with parents, and parents have a problem with Wexton,” the ad voice-over says.

“There is overwhelming evidence that our children are failing and falling behind in school,” Cao told the Washington Examiner in a statement. “Democrats have no solution except to criminalize parents and actively come between the child and parent relationship. We must be aggressive in our efforts to refocus learning on the basics of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.”

Wexton has tried to distance herself from Guzman in recent weeks, despite previously touting the state legislator’s endorsement. Guzman has also donated to Wexton’s campaign.

“As a mom and the only parent of kids in our public schools in this race, ensuring all children have the opportunity to receive a world-class education has always been a priority for me,” Wexton told the Washington Examiner in a statement earlier this week. “I believe that parents have the most important role to play in helping their kids get on a pathway to success for their future, and don’t support proposals that would put parents in jail for not supporting their child’s gender identity or sexual orientation.”
