For those not up to date or really paying a lot of attention to all of this “SEL” talk going on, and you have high school students, well you’re in for a real treat. It’s called CASEL. CASEL is applicable to all students, however, if you have a kid that entered HS in 2018/2019, be warned that your student(s) will need to be proficient in Social Justice, Equity, and Global Citizenry in order to graduate. Again, not me being hyperbolic but the state of VA and LCPS forcing their reprogramming efforts onto your kids. How? See the details below as well as the Virginia state code 8VAC20-131-51. This “requirement” will come in the form of “Formative” and “Summative” assessments. In a nutshell, students will be grouped into buckets based on how they perform on their “Formative” assessments. For example, those students that require more reprogramming or assistance in their transformation, according to the SEL framework will be place in a group where more focus and emphasis can be placed on the areas holding them back from becoming full fledged Social Justice Warriors. This allows for developmental differences in children and for repeated instruction. See VA SEL Standards.
